Kattuyanam rice is one of the traditional varieties of rice cultivated in South India. In ancient period, the rice variety Kattu Yanam is known as kattudai Onan. The rice variety fade away over time, and revoked later by Nammazhvar and renamed as Kattuyanam. The Kattuyanam paddy crop grows up to seven feet tall and can grow to a level where an elephant can hide. That is why this paddy field is named as Kattuyanam (meaning Wild Elephant in Tamil).
